VILLA D'ESTE

It was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, who was appointed Civil Governor of Tivoli by Pope Julius III, who wanted him in this way compensate after defeating him in the race to the papal throne, the villa was drafted by the Neapolitan Pirro Ligorio: they entrusted the restoration Benedictine monastery of architect G. A. Galvani, keeping for himself the realization of the magnificent garden. Passed to the cardinal's death in the hands of parents, Alexander and Luigi, then passed to the Hapsburg family of Mary Beatrice, last Este: his situation was deteriorating before their eyes, when it was partially saved by Cardinal de Hohenlohe, who rinverdì the splendor and also host the famous Franz Liszt. In 1919 under the Treaty of St. Germain became the Italian owner.

The work performed by Ligorio was truly remarkable: it was to overcome many practical problems and began creating the high embankment of the garden, using the old city walls as counters, dug under the city of Tivoli a long tunnel of 600 m from the basin 'Aniene wore an incredible amount of water until the tank above the fountain Ovato, channeled water from the spring Rivelese up to tanks of Villa and calculated exactly how much water it would take to make all the games I had in mind, using only the principle of communicating vessels. They availed themselves of the collaboration of skilled plumbers like Giacomo della Porta and Claude Venard, who designed the hydraulic organ. But what impresses even more are the numbers: 35,000 square meters of gardens, 250 fountains, pools of water 60, 255 waterfalls, 100 tanks, 50 fountains, terraces and exedras 20, 300 gates, 30,000 seasonal plants in rotation, 150 trees with tall trunks, 15,000 perennial plants and ornamental trees, 9,000 square meters of roads, driveways and ramps.
